We’ve had a couple of 17 year olds access shelter at Harbor House. So far we’ve been working closely with the agencies that referred them to us and we’ve had some good outcomes. The policies are basically the same as any other adult resident. They are expected to follow the same guidelines. We take a bit more of a team approach with the 17 year olds to make sure they are getting adult services for housing, food, financial resources and they work with a youth advocate for educational assistance and wellbeing.  We were nervous at the start of this but with good collaboration and community resources there haven’t been too many issues so far (knock on wood.)

Good Morning Everyone,



We are working on policy and procedure regarding the new law surrounding allowing 17 year olds in shelter. Have any of you started working on this as well? Any thoughts/ideas/barriers you can share with us as we are in our creation stage? Have any of you had a 17 year old in shelter and could share some helpful tips?
